About me

I’m an academic and activist living and working in Brighton.

I received a BA in Political Science and Philosophy from the University of Birmingham (2010), and an MA in Sexual Dissidence in Literature and Culture from the University of Sussex (2014). My doctoral thesis, which I was awarded in 2024 from the University of Roehampton, is titled “It’s still a form of violence”: Sex workers’ experiences of domestic and familial abuse

My research explores sex workers’ experiences of domestic and familial abuse, with a particular focus on mental health, whorephobia, and financial abuse, as well as abolitionist and community based interventions and support.

Alongside my own research I am part of a research project with Dr Laura Connelly titled Equality and Inclusion: Promoting responsible academic engagement with sex workers. This project aims to explore how academics can operate in a more ethical and responsible way with sex workers, from the perspective of sex workers. It is a project that is informed by a ‘scholar-activist’ approach: an approach orientated around how academics can best work in service to the communities in which they research.

I have been active in the fight for decriminalisation of sex work for a number of years, and I work closely with SWARM, Decrim Now and ECP.

Away from research, I am co-convener of the British Sociological Association’s Violence Against Women and Girls Study Group and a board member for the Sex Work Research Hub in addition to organising two separate international PhD networks: one for researchers of the sex industry, the other for researchers in and around VAWG.

When I have spare time, I enjoy playing poker, reading fiction, beachcombing, and annoying my cat Pepper Pants.
